You have heard it is awesome (it is)! Still not sure about massage cupping?

You may have heard we offer massage cupping. One of the reasons we might suggest to add cupping to your massage is to quickly and efficiently soften the top layer of muscle tension. After the top layer is once again pliable, we are able to then go into the deeper muscular layers to address the deeper source of tension.

Here are some answers to the most common questions we hear regarding massage cupping…

Is it painful? – No. Like deep tissue massage, done correctly, cupping massage is not painful.

Will I have red circle marks? (i.e. will I look like Michael Phelps or Gwyneth Paltrow?) – Possibly.

It depends on each person; some people are more prone to cupping marks. If you are concerned about cupping marks, we can work exclusively with dynamic cupping.

What is the difference between static and dynamic cupping?

Static cupping is when a cup is placed in an area for a short period of time (3-5min). Dynamic cupping is when the massage therapist continually moves the cup. Both dynamic and static cupping work great depending on the goals of the session.

Is there fire involved? – Not with our massage cupping. There is a type of cupping that uses fire to create a vacuum in a glass cup but we use silicone cups like these:

No fire needed! These cups create their own gentle vacuum when pressed.

So why ask for cupping to be incorporated in your next massage?

As massage therapists, we work with our hands, forearms and elbows to create change to your muscle and fascia by pressing into the muscle to a comfortable level of depth.

Cupping allows us to create change by pulling on muscle and fascia without discomfort. The cupping creates space among tissue that allows for deep stretching and quickly brings fluidity to an area of tension.

It is the combination of pulling of massage cupping and pressing of traditional therapeutic massage that creates the magic!

As of November 1st, Lindy, Colleen and Kelley are certified in Massage Cupping.
